If you are overweight, you should reduce your weight by eating less fat and more fibre and exercising more. People, who are overweight, tend to die earlier than those who are of average weight. They are also more prone to coronary heart disease, stroke, hernia, some cancers, diabetes, arthritis and high blood pressure.

Do you eat more when you are under a great deal of stress or as a way of making yourself fell less anxious of depressed?
Many people resort to comfort eating to avoid confronting difficult or stressful situations.
Have you been putting on weight gradually as you have grown older?
Elderly people have lower energy requirements than when they were younger because they have a lower basal metabolic rate and often exercise less.
Have been taking any medication recently?
A number of drugs, particularly steroids and the contraceptive pills, may cause a gradual increase in body weight.
Have you become overweight since you took up a less physically demanding job, or gave up playing a particular sport?
Failure to match your calorie intake to your lifestyle is another common cause of weight gain.
Are other members of your family overweight?
The tendency to be overweight does seem to run in families. However, while it is thought that generic factors do play a part in the development of obesity, it may also be due to family sharing the same unhealthy eating and exercise habits, or to a combination of all the three factors.

Giving up smoking can cause a weight gain of a few kilos, partly because eating can act as a substitute for having a cigarette in your mouth and partly because nicotine artificially raises your normal metabolic rate.
